[31:28]  1 tn Heb “it.”

[31:28]  2 tn See v. 11 for the construction. In Deut 17:2ff. false worship of heavenly bodies is a capital offense. In this passage, Job is talking about just a momentary glance at the sun or moon and the brief lapse into a pagan thought. But it is still sin.

[31:28]  3 tn The verb כָּחַשׁ (kakhash) in the Piel means “to deny.” The root meaning is “to deceive; to disappoint; to grow lean.” Here it means that he would have failed or proven unfaithful because his act would have been a denial of God.

[38:24]  4 tn Heb “it was told to Judah, saying.”

[38:24]  5 tn Or “has been sexually promiscuous.” The verb may refer here to loose or promiscuous activity, not necessarily prostitution.

[38:24]  6 tn Heb “and also look, she is with child by prostitution.”

[20:10]  7 tn Heb “And a man who.” The syntax here and at the beginning of the following verses elliptically mirrors that of v. 9, which justifies the rendering as a conditional clause.

[20:10]  8 tc The reading of the LXX minuscule mss has been followed here (see the BHS footnote a-a). The MT has a dittography, repeating “a man who commits adultery with the wife of” (see the explanation in J. E. Hartley, Leviticus [WBC], 328). The duplication found in the MT is reflected in some English versions, e.g., KJV, ASV, NASB, NIV.

[22:22]  9 tn Heb “lying with” (so KJV, NASB), a Hebrew idiom for sexual relations.

[22:22]  10 tn Heb “a woman married to a husband.”

[22:22]  11 tn Heb “burn.” See note on the phrase “purge out” in Deut 21:21.

[22:23]  12 tn Heb “finds.”

[22:23]  13 tn Heb “lies with.”

[22:24]  14 tn Heb “humbled.”

[22:24]  15 tn Heb “wife.”

[22:24]  16 tn Heb “burn.” See note on the phrase “purge out” in Deut 21:21.

[16:38]  17 tn Heb “and I will judge you (with) the judgments of adulteresses and of those who shed blood.”

[16:38]  18 tn Heb “and I will give you the blood of rage and zeal.”
